All About Waterproof Canopy Tents

The weather is unpredictable, and the only way to always have peace of mind is to use fully waterproof canopy tents.

A water-repellant or water-resistant shelter simply won’t work. On the wettest days, waterproofness is essential.

If you’ve started your canopy tent search, you’ve probably seen a range of water-related claims. We’ll help you make sense of them all and give you the facts to land on a great choice.

Water-Resistant, Water-Repellent, Waterproof

What’s the difference?

These three terms are often used synonymously, but they actually indicate quite different properties.

  • Water-repellent: Water-repellent textiles initially allow water to slide off the roof surface. Raindrops do not immediately penetrate the textile, but after a short time, the water will start to seep through it. So, a water-repellent pop-up canopy tent wicks away moisture but doesn’t stand up to heavy rain.

  • Water-resistant: Water-resistant canopy tents are made of a tightly woven textile, making it difficult for water to pass through. Still, even then, persistent or heavy rain can cause leaks.

  • Waterproof: Waterproof pop-up tents are the only ones that provide a lasting barrier against water. You can count on your waterproof canopy tent to offer complete protection from water, even on very rainy days.

When purchasing your next canopy tent, choose one that’s truly waterproof!

MEASURES OF WATERPROOFNESS

What’s the Hydrostatic Pressure Test? Why Should I Care About the Water Column When Choosing a Canopy Tent?

Among waterproof fabrics, there are different levels of durability to consider. The hydrostatic water column provides an objective measure of waterproofness for easy comparison.

To test a textile’s waterproofness, a so-called hydrostatic pressure test is performed. A cylinder is placed on the canopy tent textile and is gradually filled with water. The water pressure starts at zero and then increases by 10 mm per second. The test stops as soon as the third water droplet penetrates the textile and is visible on the inside.

Here’s a quick calculation example: If, after 10 minutes, the textile lets through exactly three drops of water, i.e., 1000 mm, the test is over and the textile has a water column value of 1000 mm.

As a rule of thumb, consider that: The higher the water column, the more waterproof the textile.

HITTING THE MARK

What’s the Minimum Water Column for a Canopy Tent to Be Considered Waterproof?

Waterproof standards vary depending on the type of textile and intended use. For example, a raincoat requires a lower water column than camping gear to be considered waterproof. According to European standard EN 343:2003, class 2 textiles with a water column of 800 mm or more and class 3 textiles with a water column of 1300 mm or more are considered waterproof. Pop-up tents, however, must meet a higher standard. They’re considered waterproof with a water column value of at least 1,500 mm.

When searching for a waterproof canopy tent, think beyond the water column, too. Just because the fabric used meets the waterproof threshold doesn’t mean the roof will be leak-proof. The weak points of many pop-up tents are their seams. Always ask about roof construction, and make sure the tent seams are waterproofed too.

TESTED, CERTIFIED, AND GUARANTEED

How Do I Know My Ecotent® Is Waterproof?

Testing and Certification. We care about our customers, so we select high-quality materials and regularly subject them to testing. Our textiles are sent to a renowned international research center to ensure they perform to our standards. Third-party testing gives us confidence that our pop-up tents are 100% waterproof. Our Oxford textiles withstand water columns of 1600 to 2000 mm—well above the 1500 mm threshold for canopy tent waterproofness.

Tent Construction. Beyond our fabrics, our tent construction sets us apart from other brands. Most pop-up canopy tents on the market utilize horizontal seams near the tent peak in their roof designs. These can result in water pooling near the lip of the fabric. Such tents often experience water leaks and sagging over time. Even with a waterproof material, the rain eventually wins if water collects on the roof. That’s why our tents combine vertical seams with a sophisticated tensioning system. Even after repeated reassembly, our designs encourage water to run cleanly off the roof, without pooling or sagging. Plus, every seam is completely waterproofed, leaving no room for even the smallest drop of water.

These are small details, yet they make a big difference.
