Pop-Up Tents with 50+ UV Protection

All About Canopy Tent Sun Performance & Why It Matters

When it comes to choosing an outdoor canopy tent, almost no feature is more important than sun protection. From keeping your guests safe and comfortable to putting your best foot forward, sun performance is essential.

There are two important factors to consider when it comes to the fabric roof of your pop-up tent: UV protection and color-fade resistance.

The first has to do with the tent’s ability to protect against the sun’s harmful rays. The second refers to the qualities of the fabric that keep it lightfast, even in prolonged sunlight.

Let’s dive deeper into sun performance and unpack all the features you should look for when buying an outdoor canopy tent.

RELIABLE & READY TO GO

Sun-Ready Fabrics

When it comes to our materials, we leave nothing to chance. Our polyester textiles come in 15 beautiful colors and undergo testing to ensure the color holds, even in prolonged sunlight. Plus, our fabrics offer a UPF 50+ rating, the highest achievable UV protection value on the scale.

Fade Resistant Fabric Colors.

When choosing a sun-ready canopy tent fabric, there’s more to sun performance than UPF rating. It’s also worth considering your choice of color. Darker colors, like black or burgundy, absorb more UV than lighter colors, such as white. If you’re after maximum UV protection, consider opting for a deeper, more saturated hue.

Fade resistance is also a quality to keep in mind. Ecotent® lightfast fabrics offer durable resistance under DIN EN ISO 105-B02 with a blue scale rating of 4.5-6.5 of 8. That means that in tests exposing our fabrics to light conditions that simulate daylight, our fabrics performed extraordinarily well. Even in prolonged daylight, our fabrics hold their brilliant colors.

How UV Protection Is Measured for Textiles

How UV Protection Is Measured for Textiles

You’re probably already familiar with the term “SPF,” which stands for “Sun Protection Factor.” Skincare products, like sunscreen, use the SPF scale as a measure of sun protection.

Textiles, however, use a different scale. UV protection is usually indicated as a measure of UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor). The UPF scale is used for everything from clothing and umbrellas to canopy tents and awnings. Like SPF, a lower UPF rating means less sun protection and a higher one means more sun protection.

According to the UV STANDARD 801, one of the most stringent standards for textile sun protection, you can break down UPF values as follows:

  • UPF 15 to 24: medium sun protection

  • UPF 25 to 50: high sun protection

  • UPF 50+: excellent sun protection

Note that the UPF scale stops at 50. Values above 50 don’t offer significantly higher protection and are usually indicated as 50+, the industry standard for canopy tents. Always pay attention to the UPF value of your pop-up tent and look for one that offers sufficient sun protection.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW

What exactly are UV rays?

If you’ve ever wondered what people mean when they talk about UV rays, here’s a quick science lesson. The sun produces massive amounts of heat, light, and energy. Solar radiation reaching the Earth is divided into infrared rays, which generate heat and are not visible, visible rays, or light, and ultraviolet rays.

The ultraviolet rays, or UV rays, are invisible, but they contain the most energy. They’re subdivided into three sub-types of rays.

  • UVA rays: reach the Earth unimpeded

  • UVB rays: up to 10% reach the Earth

  • UVC rays: do not reach the Earth, being stopped by the ozone layer

Proper sun protection, like an outdoor canopy tent, is very important to protect against harmful UVA and UVB rays.
