If you’ve done your homework on high-quality canopy tents, you’ve probably noticed a few fire-related safety claims. Let’s define a few key terms you might encounter. 

“Fire-retardant” and “fire-resistant” are often used interchangeably, but actually, they have different meanings. 

Fire-retardant fabrics are chemically treated to make them strong against fire. While the underlying fabric is not fireproof - for any tent, the non-flammable treatment significantly slows the fire if the fabric is exposed to flames. Eventually, even fire-retardant fabrics will burn if exposed to fire for a prolonged time.

Fire-resistant fabrics are made up of synthetic fibers, like polyester or nylon, that are designed to resist burning. Even after prolonged fire exposure, fire-resistant fabrics will not burn. At some point, however, the fabric could melt.

Fabrics come in various fire-retardant and fire-resistant levels. To understand exactly what your canopy tent protects against, be sure to review any available fire certifications. 

While it’s a good idea to invest in a fire-retardant canopy tent, ideally fire won’t ever pose a threat to your tent. Here are some other ways you can be proactive about fire safety. 

• Regularly clean cooking areas to prevent grease buildup. 

• Keep your area free of trash and clutter. 

• Ensure proper ventilation around cooking and catering areas. 

• Be sure hot cooking areas, like grills, stoves, or ovens, do not touch tent surfaces. 

• Know the location of fire extinguishers and fire blankets, especially if cooking. 

• Inspect your tent before use to make sure it’s in good condition. 

With care and preparation, you can avoid a fire emergency and protect your equipment and others.

Our fire-retardant fabric performs best with proper care and maintenance. Between uses or if the tent canopy gets dirty, gently wash the roof with water, a spray cleaner, or a mild detergent. Use a soft cloth or sponge to scrub areas that need a little extra attention. 

To preserve the integrity of the fabric, avoid high-pressure washing or powerful hose jets. Be sure to rinse away any soap or cleaner so it doesn’t leave a residue. Let the tent dry completely in an area with good ventilation before packing away the tent frame and roof.
